Arrival in Korea

Since yesterday I’m back in Korea. The journey took almost 24 hours, but it didn’t feel that long. On the flight I counted and found out: It was my sixth flight to Korea. So it would be really surprising, if it would feel unfamiliar.
Unlike the first time, I didn’t experience the departure as a parting. My parents, my brother and good friends are used to the fact, that I often just show up on a yearly base. I guess, also in the future I will try to spend at least some weeks per year in Germany. And of course, I’m happy about everyone, who is going to visit me in Korea. (Some already have concrete plans to come.) So as meeting each other again is already in sight, such a parting is actually not a really parting. Still, I didn’t sleep well in the night before my departure.
My parents and my brother took the time to accompany me to the airport Muenster/Osnabrueck on thursday morning. From there I flew to Frankfurt and then to Incheon. The plane was half empty, I even had three seats for myself, so that I could lie down and sleep.
From the airport in Incheon I took a bus to Seoul and visited my former and future collegue Heiko. We had a cup of coffee and drove the flat of another collegue, who is spending his holidays in Germany right now. As the university hasn’t prepared a flat for me yet, he offered me, that I can stay at his place for the first days.
The two packages, that I sent to his adress about two weeks ago, even arrived ahead of me. First, it seemed to be difficult to get them, as the DHL package number in Germany is different from the one in Korea, so nobody was able to provide us information on the phone. But there was small sticker attached to the front door with the cell phone number of the delivery man, who brought both packages this morning.
For the next days a couple of errands and appointments are scheduled, so I will be busy. That makes it easier to get accustomed to the korean time. This time I will try to follow the natural day-and-night-rhythm strictly, which is not easy, as my biorhythm is shifted by 8 hours, so that I feel like it’s afternoon when it actually is midnight, and like it’s time to go to sleep, when it’s early in the morning. I’m glad, that I still have two weeks until my first class. I wouldn’t like to teach my students while having to fight against sleepiness!

Freut mich, dass Du gut in Korea angekommen bist! Ich wünsche Dir natürlich ebenfalls eine ganz tolle Zeit in Deiner “neuen alten” Heimat! Ich werde Dein Tagebuch auf jeden Fall mit großem Interesse verfolgen und freue mich schon, wenn wir uns - hoffentlich möglichst bald - in Korea sehen!

das gemischte Gefühl aus ehemaliger Vertrautheit und gleichzeitig neuer Fremdheit, das man als Europäer beim Wiedereintauchen in ein asiatisches Land verspürt, kenne ich auch nur zu gut. Die Sprachkenntnisse geben einem dabei allerdings das angenehm sichere Gefühl, jedes eventuell auftretende neue Problem im Dialog lösen zu können. Ich wünsche Dir einen guten Arbeitsbeginn und freue mich auf Deinen neuen Blog !

Danke für die lieben Grüße! Ich werde mir Mühe geben immer mal wieder etwas interessantes aus Korea zu berichten! Allen Referendaren drücke ich feste die Daumen, und den frisch gebackenen Lehrern wünsche ich ebenfalls viel Ausdauer. Die ersten Berufsjahre sollen ja die härtesten sein…
